It calls for a consulate when the non-resident diaspora spills over 500,000 at a given place outside India.

A proposal to this effect is in the offing which, when sanctioned will mean that the Government of India will open new consulates and missions in countries where the population of NRIs has grown to 500,000 or more, it is reported by an NRI news source.

According to the source, the Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs confirmed that discussions on the issue had been held with the Union Ministry of Finance which has agreed in principle, the intention being to assuage complaints from many countries about delays in consular services.

India has four consulates in the USA, one in the UK and two in Germany.

There are currently 25 million NRIs in 110 countries, with the largest concentration in the Arab Gulf countries, it is reported.

In the year 2005 remittances to India came in at $24 billion, of which almost 45 percent came from the Arab Gulf countries. US Indians have invested $5.2 billion, the report goes.

Kerala is the largest hub of families with NRI members working abroad. NRI husbands’ lately have been in the news for having been conned. According to the report from the, a 56 year old woman Jayakumari, alias Jayanthi be friended a number of local women, making friends with them and then borrowing large amounts from a number of them, promising the money was safe by showing them deposit certificates and property documents.

As reported, the gullible women are all wives of Keralites whose husbands work in the Gulf countries. They realized the deceit when Jayakumari did not repay promised amounts to some of the benefactors and disappeared. She is said to have taken more than 7 million rupees from her trusting friends as the report goes.

The con-woman’s husband too works for Gulf. Police are looking for her. The NRI news is not always pleasant. The stories largely go around the NRI investment and such subjects.
