Misusing Power through Spy Cams

Who would not want to be Big Brother? To become the all-seeing, powerful god of all? Well, possibly not "domineering god of all" but being the all-seeing one will be just as dominant, don't you think? That can be one basis why there are several issues when it comes to utilizing hidden spy cameras, invasion of privacy being one of these. Power is actually something that everyone abhors and, ironically, everybody likes. Spy cameras, while they're a benefit to a specific person, may be so hurtful to the other. They could be an essential tool or something that will bring you down.

There is this one case involving a teacher who used a hidden camera cloaked as a button to film mischevious students in school. The students and their families have filed charges against the said teacher for "abusing her authority" and recording the students without their permission. True, it was illicit for the professor to do such, but if we evaluate the other manner, we could see that what the professor was actually doing was revealing these behavioral matters to the public so that they can be addressed accordingly. I'm somewhat sure that the Virginia Tech tragedy is still fresh on all people's minds. Such behavioral inclinations could have been noticed earlier and consequently prevented the incident from happening. If a hidden spy cam is what it requires to stop such tragic occurrences, then I will not mind teachers filming their students at school in any way.

Still there are also some who abuse the benefits of hidden video cameras. I would suppose all are aware of matters of shocking demeanor caught on tape that are being utilized to blackmail an individual. Or those that blatantly invades someone's privacy as in putting concealed cameras in places wherein surveillance is not necessary, like the restroom or personal rooms for purposes of personal gratification or malicious intent. Stalking using spy video cams is also another form of misuse of this technology.

Nevertheless, there is one thing that shocks me. Some homeowners use nanny cameras to regulate their baby-sitters and house helpers while they are away. And these nannies are not aware of the placement of the spy camera until they get caught doing some hanky-panky and confronted about it. But nobody seems to be complaining. When they get caught abusing a child or doing something inappropriate, the issue of the nanny's claim to privacy is never raised. It is because the owners possess the power to do whatever they want to secure the family and the house helper did something incorrect.

So when is the use of concealed surveillance cameras defensible and when is it not? Apparently, the thin red demarcation dividing them is a lot thinner than we believe. When the person making use of the surveillance cam is in authority, its use is justified. But if selecting to use hidden spy cameras would make us more secured, then I'm for it. Besides, why would I worry about it when I'm not doing anything that's against the rules or is morally incorrect? However, just as long as they maintain well behind the line, it would not be a concern.
