The MID is a larger form factor than a Smartphone but smaller than the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC). As such, the device has been described as filling a consumer niche between Smartphones and Tablet PCs.
The techniques of MIDs are designed to allow uncompromised browsing of the internet and with the number of mobile browsers for e.g. Opera Mobile, Opera Mini, Skyfire, Safari, S60 browser, etc.
The benefits of MID’s include:
• Large, bright screens that are high resolution
• Built-in Wi-Fi
• Touch screen or hardware based-keyboard
• Media expansion through SD Cards
• Bluetooth for use with wireless keyboards and other devices
• On-board camera
• Longer battery-life
LG and Intel recently announced that the first of these devices using Intel’s Moorestown processor (designed specifically for MIDs) would be available within the next year or so.
Intel MID platforms
Intel announced a prototype MID at the Intel Developer Forum in Spring 2007 in Beijing. An MID development kit by Sophia Systems using Intel Centrino Atom was announced in April 2008. Also, Intel formed collaboration with Ubuntu to create Ubuntu for Mobile Internet Devices distribution, known as Ubuntu MID Edition.
Hardware: The device contains a processor and chipset produced by Intel that consumes less power than most of the x86 derivatives and are an extension of the Centrino mobile platform. Currently, several platforms have been announced, as listed below:
McCaslin platform (2007): This platform contains an Intel A100/A110 processor (codenamed Stealey) 90 nm running at 600-800 MHz respectively.
Menlow platform (2008): This platform contains an Intel Atom processor (codenamed Silverthorne and Diamondville) 45 nm CMOS running up to 1.86 GHz. It uses Poulsbo Chipset and includes Intel HD Audio, Azalia.
Moorestown platform (2009): This platform contains an Intel Atom processor (codenamed Lincroft) 45 nm.
Operating system: Intel MIDs will run an embedded version of Linux with a finger friendly user interface modified by Intel. However, with the dual-core processor, the device is capable of running Windows XP and Windows Vista.
TG's LLUON Mobbit
Last year Trigem had announced the new UMPC/MID, the LLUON Mobbit PS400, powered by a 1.33GHz Z520 ATOM CPU, features a nice little 4.8” touchscreen (WSVGA) LCD, 1GB of RAM, 30GB of HDD (or 16GB SSD), the Korean Wimax equivalent of Wi-Bro, the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a digital TV tuner, a 2MP camera and Windows XP Home.
Samsung’s Mondi, a huge WiMax slider MID
Samsung had announced its WiMax touch-screen MID device called “Mondi” in April 2009. It packs with laptop and Netbook worthy features into a compact design.
The 4.3-inch display of Mondi dominates the front display, leaving room only for a camera lens and a couple of physical controls. The operating system is Windows Mobile 6.1. Its slider design hides a full QWERTY keyboard, a navigation toggle, and an Internet Explorer browser shortcut.
In Mondi, besides the WiMax Mobile Internet Access, user will find Wi-Fi, GPS with support for Route 66 Navigation, Microsoft Outlook and Windows Mobile Office, 4GB of internal memory, Bluetooth, a 3-megapixel camera, a video player, messaging, and Push e-mail (POP3, IMAP, and SMTP), instant-messaging and a personal organizer.
Conclusion
MIDs are especially designed to overcome the limitations that users generally face while browsing internet on smaller screen. Netbooks, no doubt offer user friendly interface but when it comes to efficiency, battery backup and portability, MID wins the race. Also, Smartphones are not optimized for net surfing.
