Learning with pictures is effective and powerful because our mind is built for visual. This has been a controversial subject because it seems this concept overlooks the idea that memory is created from feelings, smell or taste. But studies have found that everything that is brought into the subconscious mind turns into illustrations and pictures. Even feelings, smell and sounds turn into pictures for our deep mind to hold in memory.

This is true for blind people. Even people who have never seen. Our minds translate everything we see, touch, taste and hear into pictures. Knowing this gives us an advantage. I will explain why.

When studying we often find it difficult for us to absorb what we're attempting to read. There is a reason for this. First of all our minds are divided into two parts. The conscious and the subconscious. Our subconscious mind receives and retains everything our eyes, ears, taste, smell and feelings experience. Like a powerful massive hard drive our subconscious retains everything.

Why can't we recall information from our subconscious mind at will? Recall anything at any given moment? The answer is somewhat complex but there is a way to understand the general idea of what's going on. Our conscious mind is like the index of a library. The library is the subconscious mind. If we index out conscious mind then we can at will pull information that is stored in our subconscious mind. The effective way to do this is with pictures and illustrations.

We did an experiment. We created a picture book Microsoft Excel instruction manual. Very little words and a lot of illustrations. Even the words were created in poetry with the intent of creating a picture in the users minds. We experimented on ten year old children. The experiment worked. These average school children were able to comprehend Microsoft Excel. Not only comprehend it but learn Excel in a way that they were able to retain what they learned.
