Michael Jurogue Johnson- A Chicago Artist to Watch Out For

Michael Jurogue Johnson is a Chicago artist who creates beautiful pieces of artwork that feature animals. Michael was born with Down syndrome but works hard to overcome. His vision and artistic abilities have brought him many accolades throughout his short life.

As a dog-lover I am always on the lookout for people in the community who have made outstanding contributions to animals and their well-being. One artist I recently had the pleasure of hearing about is Michael Jurogue Johnson, a Chicago- based artist who features dogs and cats in his artwork. Michael has been painting for over 16 years now and working as a full-time artist for 9. If you take a look at his work, you can see a true artistic and unique spin on ever piece. He carefully crafts his artwork to inspire people by sharing his artistic vision as a person with Down syndrome. Michael has painted pieces for Hillary Clinton and House of Representatives member Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Governor Sarah Palin.

Some of Michael's amazing accomplishments are:

• He was highlighted on the cover of National Down Syndrome Society's (NDSS)"News & Views" magazine

• He has spoken at the NDSS conventions and shown his work

• One of his original works was chosen as the winning poster design for "Pets Make a Difference" contest, which was sponsored by The American Veterinary Medical Association

• He was on the cover of "DS League Lines", a quarterly newsletter for the DS league of CA

• He was the subject of feature cover story in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association

• In 2007 he received a NDSS & DSALA"Voice Award", which is given to individuals born with Down syndrome who expressed their voices to the public. He was honored for reaching "out to the community and had his voice heard through his dedication to the visual arts"

• He has illustrated two children's picture books, "Sparky's Party" and "A Boy Who Liked Color"
