There are basically two types of surgeries 1) Restrictive surgery such as Lap Band surgery and 2) combined malabsorptive and restrictive surgery such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In the first type of surgery the size of the stomach is reduced with the help of a band and/or staples. As a result of this there is a drastic reduction in the amount of food the stomach can ingest. In the second method the capacity of the stomach is reduced and the upper region of the small intestine is bypassed. This causes a reduction in the number of nutrients the body absorbs. Thus a stomach bypass operation may be sectioned using a staple, band or gastrectomy. It may also differ in the amount of duodenum and jejunum is bypassed.
Obesity is now considered to be an epidemic with global proportions. It is therefore important that care environments adapt to the various challenges faced by bariatric care. One of the main challenges that is faced by care givers is that caring for such patients is psychologically and physically challenging. Well there is no need to worry; safe, optimum solutions are available.
We need to understand that the principles of good care are similar to patient care in other areas. Obese and overweight people require the same amount of care and dignity as compared to other patients. On the other a safe working environment has to be provided to carers as well.
To be able to deliver quality care you should be able to predict the challenges that you may encounter in all the stages involved in the care giving process. Based on this prediction you should be also able to prepare for them. Yes we do agree that the risks that are work-related in bariatric care are slightly greater - but the main issue of carer confidence is to be able to minimize those risks and create an environment that has the right equipment, space and working techniques in place.
