Certainly, some of these are initially frivolous, but why are so many abandoned, especially in a time when Americans are particularly concerned about their health care? It’s a tough question to answer, but medical malpractice has always been one of the toughest cases to prove. It’s a specialty that calls for an attorney that specializes in taking on major medical companies and their insurance companies. Annually, there have been about 4% less malpractice claims approved between 1995 and 2000. That’s interesting considering that during that time medical expenses had gone up and people had shown greater dissatisfaction with the medical profession.
Once again, on average 70,000 people die each year in hospitals due to preventable medical errors. Yet still 86,480 medical malpractice claims were declined in the year 2000 alone. Somewhere there are major disconnects. A big part of the problem stems from the fact that medical costs have increased 113 percent since 1987 while the amount spent on medical malpractice insurance has increased 52 percent during that time. Malpractice insurance only accounts for 3.2% of the average physician’s revenues. That difference has gone straight into the pockets of the doctors who have been negligent with their patients and causing tens of thousands of deaths in hospitals every year.
For every 7.6 hospital injuries there is only one malpractice claim. These numbers are scary when we consider that we trust our lives to doctors that are simply profiting more and acting more recklessly with our health. Too many people are needlessly dying in hospitals while too many doctors are making too much money at their expense. They are definitely tough cases and not every attorney is eager to take them, but if you feel that you were wronged at the doctor’s office or at the hospital; it’s worth investigating your case to see if there was negligence and to see if you have cause to pursue the matter. The only way that this injustice can change is if patients stand up and fight back against the doctors that are harming them and lawyers back them along the way.
