Social Media is all the buzz in the business world. The next time your on twitter check out the philanthropy and charity causes. There are piles of organizations for every medical and environmental concern out there. If everyone is chattering away on twitter how do you get your cause noticed?

Marketing Is Simpler in the Non-Profit World

Marketing is all about figuring out what your donor is really looking for then giving it to him. A lot of donors who contribute to a charitable cause have someone that has experienced the illness; have kids interested in the activity or a personal interest in the cause. This is not to be confused with selling. It is merely educating donors about your organization. Once you tell them about your service the “selling” takes care of itself.

I'm not trying to tell you the road in lined with gold because you will still have to work hard and persist in your intentions. Talk about what your organization is doing to help and always stress the emotional aspect. This is a mild form of manipulation but without it people will not get around to donating. You need the money to help out so it's not a dark secret but the simple way it works.

Research your Donors and Users

Do you have research on your users? Why do they need to use your services? Who are your donors? Are they organizations or mainly individuals and emotionally why do they give to you? What do they hope your organization will do in the future? These points may sound elementary but it will make things pretty tough if you don’t know who you are serving and why the money is coming to you.

What Is your Goal For Marketing?

You need to be specific about what you are aiming for. Are you trying to attract new donors or members? Increase the geographic area that you are servicing or increasing the number of people you want to help. Put this target on paper as you will find that you consult it through the planning stages to help keep you on track.

Using Interns – A Win / Win Situation

A fantastic idea to help you market your non profit or next fundraising event is to
offer an internship program. This gives the local college or university student the all important experience they are looking for as well as giving you guidance and up to date marketing tactics. This gives you a team of internal marketers and advertisers who can get to know your business, community and target market. Call your local university and offer the idea for a semester long internship as it benefits both parties.
