The person, who had shared the good times and the bad times with you so far, would stop supporting you anymore. The person, who swore to you of his togetherness with you till the eternity, has now forgotten to keep those promises. |

It is quite natural that the people suffering from depression and miseries would addict themselves to alcohol. Gradually, when this becomes a practice, the inebriated condition itself would provoke them to commit minor offences. Stress is perceived to be the major factor for alcohol and other drug addictions. Many studies conducted so far, have failed to reveal the casual relationship between the alcohol use and stress. However, it has been widely accepted and proved by the researchers that the stress and the body’s response to it are likely to play a vulnerable role in consuming alcohol initially. It is the major cause for the initiation as well as continuation. Stress can occur due to various traumatic events such as divorce, death of a loved one, work pressure and financial worries.
‘Cortisol’ is the hormone related to stress, which controls the human emotions. Intake of alcohol tends to increase the levels of the hormone and the tempo would be maintained even after the person has stopped drinking. As an offshoot, the depressed people will have more urge to consume alcohol. The hormone would also provoke the people to increase the quantity of alcohol perpetually. This will also affect the body condition greatly.
Stress modifies the reinforcing effects of addiction to alcohol at the neurobiological level, which means it increases the activity of brain systems that are involved in motivational aspect. It also takes up the role of mediation to acquire the rewarding effects of alcohol intake.
There is a direct relationship between stress-induced changes and the responsiveness of organism. It is quite natural that when an organism is in a stressful situation, the biological systems cannot be idle. They will be activated automatically to help the organism in managing the stress. The adrenal glands release adrenalin to help the organism and various brain regions secrete pain-relieving chemicals as a reaction to a stress in an organism. In the same way, stress ends up in increased activity in the brain system just to counteract the negative emotional state. As a result, most of the times, it makes the person take the easy route of countering i.e. consuming alcohol.
Each and every time a new stress-causing incident occurs, the person who has the habit of drinking heavily, is prone to consume extra alcohol by 24 percent. If the person undergoes a serious stressful event such as divorce, then it would turn even social drinkers to heavy drunkards. However, it has been found that stress cannot make the teetotallers to drink.
Stressful circumstance which leads to alcohol consumption would be a short-term development. When the level of stress reduces, then the person might also give up the habits gradually. However, it very much depends on the nature of individuals where a person with high level of emotions and sensitivity might find it difficult to come out of the bad habits.
Most of the adults would take two to three years to adapt to the changes caused by separation and divorce. People who had additional problems such as joblessness or illness due to divorce would take additional time to recuperate from physical and mental illness. The intensity of loss differs from person to person. It undermines the person’s secured life and well-being.
To overcome these challenges put forth by the divorce, a person must accept the fact that there is no point in holding on to the marital relationship any more. They should stop mourning for the loss of a spouse.
