Man separated from family due to a criminal record

In June of 2002, Todd Michaels was charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. “I wish I’d thought of the consequences before,” Michaels said. “It was a huge mistake.”

Before he was arrested, Michaels used to visit his parents in Michigan at least once a month. As a young adult, he was very close to his parents, but since he has been unable to enter the U.S. because of his criminal record, they have drifted apart.

Now, Michaels’ father has a progressive illness. Doctors estimate that he has less than five years to live. Michaels wants to apply for a waiver so he can legally enter into the U.S.

However, Michaels attempted his I-192 application—the form required to obtain a waiver—by himself. Not only was he denied entry into the U.S, but his waiver application was denied.

Michaels is getting increasingly worried about his father’s health.

“If I can’t get into the States soon, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to see my Dad face-to-face again,” Michaels said. “This is driving me crazy. It’s the only thing I can think about.”

However, for Michaels, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Firms like Canadian Pardons Services provide the correct forms and documents that people with criminal records need to enter into the U.S.

“I can’t wait to see my Dad again,” Michaels said. “I will never make a mistake like that ever again.”
