Do you remember when there were no seat belts in the family car? Taking a long trip to Grandma’s house often meant fighting with our siblings to see whose turn it was to lay down in the back window.

Today, in the United States, almost every state has implemented some form of enforceable seat belt laws that protect children and adults. Every province in Canada has enforced and embraced the seat belt laws, as well. Many of us realize the importance and value of wearing a seat belt, but for some, the message is not getting across. Let’s face it. Seat belts save lives.

So, what about our pets? More and more of us are taking our pets everywhere we go. We love our pets like a member of the family, but we don’t give much thought when it comes to their safety. How many times have you seen a dog sitting in the driver’s seat, while the person is driving their vehicle? What about a dog hanging his head out the rolled down window? Does this seem safe to you? I think not.

Picture this for a moment. You are driving down a busy street and suddenly a car runs a red light and you have to slam on your brakes to avoid a collision. What would happen to your pet? More than likely, your unsecured companion animal would go flying and one or both of you would be hurt.

Each year, thousands of dogs and cats are injured or killed from sudden stops or car accidents, because they were not restrained. They may survive the initial impacted, but they may escape your vehicle and get hit by a passing car. According to the American Automobile Association, 30,000 motor vehicle crashes were directly caused by unrestrained pets. Small dogs or cats can get stuck under a gas or brake pedal. If a large dog jumps in the drivers lap, it may block their view or distract them. A pet unrestrained in a parked vehicle could dislodge the parking brake. A dog riding in the back of a pick up truck could fall out, if not tethered to the vehicle. Pets are not the only ones that are hurt during a sudden stop or unexpected crash, many drivers and passengers have also been severally hurt from their pets because they become a projectile during a sudden stop.

It’s about time we protect our beloved pets as well as ourselves from unexpected accidents. There are now many pet products that will help us protect our four legged friends from injury while traveling with us. Pet manufacturers are developing creative ways to make sure everyone is safe and secure while we are travelling. You can buy a canine seat belt that allows your dog to sit or even lay down while they are in the back seat of your vehicle. There are barriers you can install between the front and back seat. A number of these companies have introduced portable pet carriers that can be fastened right to your car seat belts. You can even have a small dog car seat installed in the passenger’s front seat. Even, the car manufacturing industry has started to introduce pet restraints to some of their vehicles.

Maybe there should be seat belt laws for our pets. Perhaps more states and provinces in North America should, follow the lead of Pennsylvania and put forth a law making it mandatory for every pet to be restrained in a moving vehicle. We make sure our passengers are buckled up. We buckle up our children. Why not our four legged, members of our family? Hopefully, common sense will prevail and we will do the right thing and that is, make sure our pets are Safe & Secure.
