In countries where the weather is particularly cold during winter it is essential that you choose an efficient heating system to keep you and your family warm. In many new houses, it is not uncommon to come across a combined heating and ventilation system that provides heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer but there are other systems out there that could possibly provide a better solution to your needs.

A new heating system is a big commitment and some important considerations need to be considered before you choose which one to install. These should certainly include the maintenance requirements each year, the cost of installing the system and the ongoing running costs. Living with the system and its effect on your health should also be considered as if you suffer from allergic problems then the forced air heating system may not be a good choice for you. There are three very popular types of heating systems available today so we will have a look at each one below:

Radiator Based Centralized Heating Systems

For the central heating system based on water flow, a large amount of installation work is required as a central boiler has to be installed along with piping that connects the system and of course the radiators themselves. To make central heating systems work they need pipes to be connected to all points of the system and this can take a long time if you have many rooms.

Some people do not like radiators as take up a fair amount of space in the home and are hardly a thing of beauty. With a central heating system based on water flow there will always be a high installation price due to the sheer volume of work that is needed to set it all up and test it. After the initial installation costs it is usually a very affordable system to run with an annual service requirement.

Forced Air System

This heating system uses a central furnace which heats air that is then forced around a system of ducts that cover you entire home in order to keep you warm. There is a big installation cost here too as installing all of the duct work and the centralized boiler will take time. A high efficiency furnace can be used for forced air installations. These furnaces can run on gas, electricity or oil and do not require the use of a chimney for ventilation. These furnaces are efficient to run and can last up to twenty years if serviced regularly. The biggest problem with this type of system is that of health where the forcing of the air through the ducts in your home can cause allergy problems, respiratory problems and other health issues.

Heating Using Baseboard Heaters

Electric baseboard heater systems have very low setup costs compared with the centralized water and air heating systems. The idea with baseboard heating is that heaters are installed in each room of your house and that the temperature of each room can be independently controlled. The major disadvantage with baseboard heating is the incredibly high running costs particularly when it is very cold outside. The other disadvantage of this form of heating is that the air in the rooms can become very dry and the best way to fix this is to place humidifiers in each room to create moisture. This is an additional expense of course.

There are pros and cons with each type of heating system described above. It doesn’t matter which one you go for but do remember to regularly service your installation so that it can serve you well for many years.
