Maintaining Your Liposuction Results

Studies show that liposuction patients who do not follow a healthy diet after surgery are 3 times more likely to regain their excess weight and 4 times more likely to gain weight if they don’t exercise.

After a liposuction treatment, some patients believe they are immune to weight gain and practice poor eating habits and limited exercise. Nothing could be further from the truth. No surgical procedure can replace a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction patients must take responsibility for maintaining their weight and overall health, not only for aesthetic reasons but also to avoid disease and illnesses and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Liposuction Experience
The liposuction procedure is designed for people who are within 10 to 25 pounds of their ideal weight but can’t get rid of stubborn trouble spots. Liposuction removes trapped fat in problem areas including the buttocks, thighs, hips, abdomen, upper arms, chin and neck. The procedure involves inserting a small suction tube through a tiny incision that breaks up and vacuums away unwanted fat trapped beneath the skin. Depending on the number of liposuction procedures the patient will either be completely or partially sedated during the surgery.

The patient needs to find a qualified plastic surgeon specially trained in body contouring who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Maintenance after Surgery
A liposuction procedure does not guarantee that you won’t regain fat. When the fat cells are removed, they do not regenerate. However, remaining fat cells can still grow and contribute to weight gain if the patient doesn’t exercise or maintain a healthy diet.

Exercise and Recovery
The day after the surgery expect to feel some pain and discomfort. Over the counter pain medications should offer relief, if not ask your doctor for a prescription. You can also expect to wear compression garments to aid in your recovery. The garment will still allow you to move and walk easily. When you are ready, walking is a good idea for your recovery process. It helps prevent blood clot formation in the legs and other post-surgical complications.

Before restarting your exercise routine, talk to your doctor first. You may be feeling better but you don’t want to traumatize your body while it’s still healing. After 1 to 2 weeks, with your doctor’s approval, you can start increasing your levels of activity.

Vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least a month to allow complete recovery. Swelling and bruising will decrease over the next couple months and loose skin will tighten over time revealing a slender new you.
