Mahabalipuram’s most renowned highlight is the Shore Temple. It is believed to be the lone survivor of the seven temples, which once stood at the place. The city is hence sometimes referred to as ‘the City of Seven Pagodas’. Lying on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, it is surely an amazing sight to watch the waves wash the floors of the temple. On weekends the temple is especially lit up and offers a spectacular sight.
A masterpiece in rock carving carved out of a cliff, Arjuna’s Penance is the largest open-air bas relief in the world. The structure depicts Arjuna, the legendary hero of Mahabharat, observing penance to obtain a special weapon from Lord Indra. This bas relief also has a large fissure, which portrays Ganga’s descent on earth.
A set of five magnificent temples also adorn the landscape of Mahabalipuram. These are fine rock temples and are named after the five Pandavas. These include Draupadi’s Ratha, Arjuna’s Rath, Nakul & Sahadev’s Rath, Bhima Rath and Dharamraja Yudhistar’s Rath. These temples in Mahabalipuram are shaped like pagodas and resemble Buddhist shrines and monasteries. Apart from these Rathas, Mahabalipuram has other rock-cut architectures too. Important of these are the fourteen Mandapas, which include Krishna Mandapam, Mahishasuramardhini Mandapam and Varaha Mandapam. Krishna Mandapam is the biggest of these and has carvings depicting Krishna’s life. The Mahishasuramardhini Mandapam depicts goddess Durga fighting against the demon Mahishasura.
Another religious site which is also a tourist attraction in Mahabalipuram is the Trimurti Cave. It has three cells dedicated to the Hindu Trinity. One of the cells contains the image of Brahma, the second a Shivalinga and the third the image of Goddess Durga. Another set of rock cave temples in Mahabalipuram are the Koneri Caves which have fine cells.
Apart from temples, beaches are a major attraction in Mahabalipuram. The chief beach here is the Mamallapuram beach, which is quite picturesque, bounded with green and lush casuarinas groves. Crowds flock to this place to watch the spectacular sunrise and sunset.
Mahabalipuram is flocked by thousands throughout the year; hence it has quite a choice of hotels. While there are ample budget hotels in Mahabalipuram, a few top quality hotels can also be found here. Budget hotels offer clean and comfortable rooms while the luxury hotels give world-class facilities. Book a hotel in Mahabalipuram in advance, no matter when you’re travelling.
