One technique your dentist may suggest is coming up with hand signals. It is very difficult to express your comfort level and inform your dentist if you need to stop a treatment while dental equipment is in your mouth. Some dentists have their patients raise a hand to let them know if they are feeling pain. Other hand signals can be used to indicate to your dentist that you need to take a break from the treatment. Taking breaks during treatments will give you a chance to rest and take deep breaths.
Use Distraction Methods to Ease Dental Anxiety
Many dentists offer amenities at their dental offices to help you feel comfortable. Some dentists have heating pads, televisions, radios, and pillows. You can distract yourself from the dentistry treatments you are receiving by watching television or listening to music. Taking your mind off your surroundings will help you relax and have a better overall experience at your dental appointments.
Breathing techniques will also help you relax. Take slow, deep breaths during your appointments and close your eyes. Breathing slowly and envisioning yourself somewhere other than the dentist’s office will aid in reducing your anxiety.

If you suffer from severe dental anxiety, you may want to speak with your dentist about sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry uses medication to gradually help you relax and feel comfortable. Sedation dentistry can be administered through the form of a pill, nitrous oxide gas, or intravenous (IV) medication. Depending on the type of treatment, the length of the appointment, and your own preferences, your dentist can help you decide which method would be best for you.
