London Marathon - World’s Famous Fundraising Event

London hosts many different events every year. But, the London Marathon is an extra special annual event for it is to raise money for charity. Along with New York, Boston, Chicago, and Berlin, London Marathon is part of the World Marathon Majors.

Chris Basher and John Disney, participants of America’s Grand City Marathons 1979 were inspired with the event and had the idea that London should host an event like this. London Marathon was first launched on Sunday, 29 March, 1981. The run covers a distance of 26 miles and 385 yards. In the first year, 20,000 applications were received and 6,747 were accepted. 6,255 participants finished the race successfully.

The Marathon race begins at three separate points around Blackheath and the finishing point is St. James’s Palace. In the 1982 Marathon, due to construction works, the finishing point was Westminster Bridge and was moved to its current location after 12 years.

The London Marathon is an unpredictable event as it starts in the Eastern Hemisphere and finishes in the Western Hemisphere. The 2011 event takes place on 17th April and is expected to start between 9AM and 11AM.

Participants start the race; but it’s the spectators who wait for the day every year to watch the event. Many family groups also participate in the event. It is believed that the event brings physical and mental fitness. The prize amount for London Marathon is £1 million

The Marathon races are conducted in three different categories: the Mass Race, the Elite Women and the Wheelchair. The event is used by many companies for branding and advertising. Virgin Money is the current sponsor of the event. This event has backed the World Guinness Record for raising more than £47.2 million for charity.

Spectators wait at tube stations and also in different vantage points to encourage the runners. The run has its way along many London attractions, such as; the London Eye, The Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral.

When watching the event and the effort of the runners, it inspires you to also raise money for charity.
