While the romantic suspense deals with mystery, chick lit is a genre of women’s fiction that attempts to address the issues of modern women in a light hearted and humorous way. The term chick lit has been derived from the word ‘chick’ which is an American slang for ‘girl’ and ‘lit’ which is a short form for ‘literature’. Fiction under this category is often criticized; describing it to be frivolous and stereotypical, but the genre continues to remain popular amongst female readers. Chick lit genre regards the womanhood of its lead female protagonist as the main theme in the plot.
Chick lit novels often feature a stylish, career-driven female protagonist who is in her twenties or thirties and may have an obsessive tendency towards something like shopping, looking good, being stylish or being obsessed about their appearance.
