In a down economy, some people will make unconventional moves to get the edge on fellow job competitors. Today this seems to include going under the plastic surgeons knife in order to make a better first impression on prospective employers.

And maybe it should come as no surprise, after a study was released recently from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons that found that women do think that cosmetic surgery can be an advantage in getting a job.

Plastic surgeons have seen their overall business decline during the current economic downturn, but they have seen an increase in patients coming in for procedures specifically to help them look better and feel more confident in the job market.

Perhaps part of the reason that segment of patients has increased so dramatically is because many more seniors are entering the job search again after losing retirement funds in the stock market last year.

Many of the people coming in for plastic surgery are asking for procedures like eyelid lifts, neck lifts, and Botox that will help them look younger and fresher and more appealing among all the many job competitors. But there are still others coming for breast implants and liposuction as a means of creating the right figure to go with the fresher face.

It appears that in some cases these cosmetic nips and tucks are really doing the trick, particularly among the middle-aged and older crowd. When age starts to take its toll particularly on the eyelids and other facial areas, plastic surgery can be a great way to look young, enough to be a part of the competition that has many more years to give in the workforce.

Here's how they work: a neck lift removes excess skin from the neck, creating a more defined chin and neck and smoothing out wrinkles for a much younger appearance. This surgery can also eliminate things like double and triple chins.

Eyelid lifts are similar in a way that they get rid of extra skin on the top of the eyelids or the bags under the lower lids. It is amazing how much this simple procedure can reduce the appearance of age and tiredness. And then of course there is Botox, an injection that temporarily paralyzes the muscles under the facial skin that cause wrinkles. It can help plump up certain droopy areas and smooth out tell-tale age lines.

And for those going a little more intensive there is liposuction. While it is not an effective or recommended method of serious weight loss, liposuction can still remove stubborn pockets of fat in the stomach, arms, neck, thighs, buttocks and many more places, when these areas are resistant to diet and exercise.

The plastic surgeon makes very small incisions in the desired region and uses a tiny suction tube called a cannula to break up and then remove the unwanted fat deposits. The effect is a slimmer tighter appearance in the affected body areas.

It has always been true that you should try looking your best when applying for jobs and going for interviews, but that idea may have taken on a whole new depth in the current down economy. While there is no guarantee that having plastic surgery performed will be the key to landing the right job, people certainly report higher confidence levels post-surgery. Perhaps that new-found confidence is what makes the difference in the end!
