The legs-thighs, hips and even the ankles-are often the bane of a dieting woman's life. The problem with fat that has accumulated around the leg and hip area is a genetic predisposition and does not respond well to exercise and diet. So, it can be very hard to get rid of without help. Here are some things you need to know about liposuction below waist:

1. Unlike other fat, where you have the fat and the tendency for fat to accumulate in the areas of the leg is determined by genetics. Another difference in leg fat and other areas is that leg fat is very close to the surface, there are no deep accumulations of fat in the legs. Because of this, the cannula used in the procedure is at a greater risk of damaging the nerves and blood vessels that are also close to the surface.

2. Areas that can be helped. Ankles, buttocks, hips, interior and anterior thighs as well as the sides of the knees can be helped through liposuction. If you are interested in treating a specific area, it may also be necessary to address another area so that you have a contoured and natural look.

For example, if you want to treat the outer thigh area, you will also likely need liposuction of the buttocks as well. The same is true for the inner thighs and the inner part of the knees. These are the areas that rub together when you walk.

3. What to avoid. Never let a surgeon use liposuction behind your knees. The sides are fine, but directly behind the knee there are nerves and blood vessels that could easily be damaged during the procedure. You may be tempted to push for too much at one time.

The leg should be treated in zones, particularly the thigh. Your surgeon should not perform liposuction all the way around the thigh in one procedure because this leads to excessive swelling of the entire leg and recovery is long and difficult. It also increases the risk of blood clots. One more issue to be avoided is excessive fat removal. Your surgeon has to be careful to keep the amount of fat reasonable and leave you with naturally contoured legs.

4. Additional procedures. Because it isn't advised to do too much at one time, you should be prepared for additional liposuction procedures to get the final result you want. Also, you may be left with sagging skin once the fat is gone which looks as bad if not worse than the fat. A thigh and buttocks lift may be necessary to put the finishing touches on your procedure.

The important thing to remember is that liposuction is a serious procedure that shouldn't be taken lightly. You have to go into it with realistic expectations and be prepared for the recovery period.

To help ensure that your procedure goes well, choose a board certified plastic surgeon to perform the procedure. Also, discuss with him your options as far as technique goes. Having liposuction below the waist can get you ready to show off your shapely slimmer legs!
