Life at the beach

Not surprisingly locals usually go to places most tourists never find out about. The food is usually cheaper, the lines are shorter and generally the food is better. It's OK to got to the giant “seafood mills” once in a while, but try going where the locals go and you'll see what I mean.

It's just days away from my annual (sometimes more often) get away to the beach. As usual my mind is whirling with anticipation for all the familiar sights and sounds. The realization of having finally arrived as we check into our great condo on the beach and look out over the deck and see the water, hear the waves and smell the suntan lotion. It's almost as thrilling as Christmas morning.

One of the many things that make this time so special for me is the chance to get fresh off the boat seafood. I just love it. We always make a stop at a local fish monger one of our first stops. Somehow keeping the condo full of fresh shrimp, crabs and various tasty fish seems to take me even further down the road to relaxation and rejuvenation.

Our favorite thing to do is to boil a couple of pounds of shrimp and ice them down just before we head out to the beach, so that when anyone needs a break or it's just time for lunch, we just pull the shrimp from the fridge and have an instant cool and refreshing snack. Through in some cool veggies and some cubed cheese on crackers and in no time we are ready to hit the beach again. Any shrimp that are left over seldom make it all the way to dinner.

With a little exploration you will also be able to find great seafood restaurants in any beach area. There are the obvious large and over run with tourist restaurants. But I like to talk to the locals and find out where they go. Not surprisingly they usually go to places most tourists never find out about. The food is usually cheaper, the lines are shorter and generally the food is better. It's OK to got to the giant “seafood mills” once in a while, but try going where the locals go and you'll see what I mean.

Whether you are in a restaurant or making something delicious back at the condo, make sure you include some of the local seafood in your vacation plans.

From the quirky shops off the beaten path to the main steam tourist traps I try to see them all. With a life long obsession with anything to do with the beach, I frequently wander the beach and back waters of the Florida gulf coast. Nothing gets me more excited than a chance to find a new gem in an unusual place.
