Leaders Check Your Egos At The Door

The world has plenty of ego inflated leaders what the world needs is a leader who has integrity and who is honest, humble, and authentic. Ego stands between leading effectively and failing miserably. Today's leader asks questions, solicits help, and involves others in every aspect of leadership.

As you walk into the boardroom for a meeting you see the sign posted to the right of the doorway, it reads, “Please, before entering make sure to check your ego outside this door."

Do you comply or do you ignore the sign? Why can't ego come into the meeting? You say to yourself, it has worked for me so far.

Egos are like mountains they are natural barriers to communication and collaboration. Surely, you have encountered the leader who refused to consider the ideas of someone else, even though their ideas would have been the key to solving the problem.

What about the strategic plan that was once thought to revolutionize and change the course of an industry but because of changes in the environment the strategic plan fizzled and yet the leader refused to alter the strategic plan. It was once considered necessary for a leader to have an ego as it demonstrated a sign of strength and conviction. Today ego means the opposite, in fact in some ways it is considered a character flaw. It is important to have strength, conviction, and a strong desire to stay the course but not at the expense of an organization all for the sake of saving a leader's face.

If you look into the mirror and see an ego as big as an elephant starring you right back in the face it may be time to take an assessment of yourself. Ask questions like, what are my insecurities? Why does failure make me think I have lost? Failure only happens when we give up. Mistakes help leaders by challenging them to think differently and by helping them to grow in their tenacious ways. How big is your ego? Don't you think you should check your ego at the door?
