Potential LASIK Side Effects

The most common LASIK side effects include:

• Dry eyes – dry, itchy, red, or irritated eyes are the most common side effect of LASIK surgery. This problem is easily treated with the use of eye lubrication drops supplied by your eye doctor, and generally last no longer than three months

• Sensitivity to light – another common, temporary side effect, sensitivity to light generally lasts for around 24 to 48 hours
In addition to these common side effects, there is a potential for side effects that may require LASIK revision surgery. These include:

• Halos, starbursts, and increased glare – These vision disruptions can be caused by a corneal flap not healing properly, or pupil dilation that exceeds the treatment zone. These disruptions are less common than other side effects, and generally subside within 30 days. Some cases may require additional procedures, or the use of glasses to correct.

• Loss of contrast sensitivity – This condition can make seeing objects clearly in low light circumstances very difficult. Most often, this problem self-corrects within six months, but may require additional procedures or the use of glasses when driving at night.

• Visual regression – The rarest of LASIK side effects, visual regression is caused by wrinkles in the corneal flap, or a hazing of the cornea. Like most LASIK side effects, this condition is generally temporary, but may necessitate further treatment.
As with all surgeries, there is no guarantee against potential side effects with LASIK. You can reduce your risk by working only with an experienced, reputable LASIK surgeon. Taking time to discuss the technology your eye surgeon will use, and to get a feel of their capabilities will require a face-to-face initial consultation. Remember, a consultation is not a commitment.
