If you are looking for a permanent way to reduce your dependence on glasses, you may wonder, am I a candidate for LASIK? This is a question best put to an experienced ophthalmologist in your area, but below are some general guidelines that your LASIK surgeon may use.

Candidates for LASIK

A good candidate for LASIK should:

• Be 18 years or older
• Have a refractive error such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
• Have had relatively stable vision over the past 12 months
• Be in generally good health
• Have no major eye diseases or infections
• Not be pregnant or nursing
• Be willing to accept the risks inherent in any surgical procedure
• Have realistic expectations of their final results

One important consideration will be the thickness of your cornea. For LASIK, a flap will need to be made in your cornea to allow your eye doctor access to your stroma, the portion of your eye reshaped during this procedure. Traditional LASIK requires a corneal thickness of 0.5 to 0.6 millimeters. If your cornea is too thin to support the corneal flap required for traditional LASIK, you may still be a candidate for bladeless LASIK or a LASIK alternative such as PRK. Your eye doctor will best be able to determine what technique and procedure will meet your unique needs.

Other considerations will be any medications you are taking, and previous vision correction surgeries. While these things will not automatically disqualify you for LASIK surgery, they may need to be considerations in your customized treatment plan.

Understanding your candidacy for LASIK will require an appointment with an experienced LASIK surgeon. Make sure to take your time in selecting a surgeon in your area who has sufficient experience, and offers state-of-the-art technology. The technology used in your procedure will have an impact on the results you can expect. You deserve the safest, most effective procedure available. Your eye doctor should be willing to discuss his technology and listen to your concerns during your initial consultation.
