When the removal is due to gender, it is usually on a woman. Women often prefer a hairless appearance on many regions of their body. With the exception of a lavish mane of tresses on the female head, other furry regions may be deemed unfeminine. Examples include underarms, facial regions such as under the lip or on the chin, upon the belly, back and legs. Even an overly hairy pubic region may be considered unattractive in some circles. Some women remove the growth that appears below bikini bottom on the upper thigh while others prefer a totally nude pubic appearance. Fashions in this often hidden region have included the shaping of stripes, circles and even hearts.
When the eradication is desired due to awkward hair growth, it can be either a male or female issue. Some men have backs and bellies that are furrier than the tops of their heads. Some eyebrows are so overgrown that they appear to be one huge brow across the forehead. This is sometimes referred to as a unibrow, which is definitely not considered to be a compliment. There is actually a medical term for the malady in a woman of excessive body hair. The scientific term for this problem is hirsutism, which sounds quite similar to what it looks like, a hair suit. When a female is stricken with this condition, she may have coarse dark facial and body hair on unlikely regions such as her back and midsection. She may have what appears to be a male beard and mustache. There are a variety of reasons for hirsutism to present itself, including an overage of male hormones such as testosterone, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing Syndrome, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, certain side effects from medications and tumors. The syndromes and medical conditions are often results of hormonal imbalances. There are times, however, when awkward hair growth is simply a result of genetics or an unlucky roll of the DNA dice.
Cultural preferences also play a part on where hair removal is desired. While heavy growth in certain bodily areas is considered attractive in some cultures, others prefer bare and smooth skin. Many European nations consider underarm and leg growth sexy on a woman, while Americans tend to like the naked look. Certain cultural norms call for beards and mustaches on males, while other cultures prefer their men’s faces to be bare. The Amish culture allows men to wear beards but not mustaches as the mustache is deemed to reflect the military and Amish culture is a peaceful one.
Laser hair removal systems are quite popular because they have long lasting results. It will take several treatments to permanently eradicate the growth, but at the end of a specified number of sessions, the follicle will have been damaged or destroyed by waves of energy and light. Damaged follicles equate to no more growth in the region.
