Curb appeal not only enhances the enjoyment of your property but its' value as well. The absolutely best way to get the desired effect is through a well planned design. Make a grand entrance!

While beauty is important to landscape design, it should be integrated in a way that is convenient, comfortable and easy to maintain. Functional, well-planned landscapes can be interesting while not being elaborate. The key is, as always, to keep it simple! (Remember, simplicity is the "spice of life" in today's world!

Starting with a coherent plan is important. The more planning, thinking, and probing you do in the planning stage, the less problematic the experience will be. Know what grows well in your area and which plants or trees don't survive in your area. Its best to pick only plants, trees, and shrubs that are appropriate for your area. Making sure that you have the right plants in the right place will inspire success and reduce maintanence. (I'll never forget the time we tried to grow a Palm tree up North! It did beautifully all winter in my classroom but never could adapt outside in the summer. It died and I learned my lesson! )

So, it's a very good idea to live with your new home awhile, especially if you don't plan on moving for a long time. You can learn its special features as well as your special needs. (I had spices growing outside by the patio in my first house. I used them "daily" and still miss that 35 years later! ) One thing that has not been mentioned...look at other landscaping and copy what you like.

There is no copywrite and they, most likely, did the same thing! The more you learn and plan, you'll probably learn ways to enhance your landscape from an aesthetic and practical viewpoint.

The clearer you are on your long range objectives, such as a deck or pool, the easier it is to focus your shorter range plans and avoid costly demolition later. In short, buying time allows you to understand the full potential of your property. That way, when you're ready, you can incorporate a custom made, professional design that will delight for years.

Just as in decorating a room, you will want to vary sizes, textures and colors of your plants and shrubs. Being living things, plants have specific needs as to sun and shade, acidic or alkaline soil, etc. You can't just plant them wherever you think they will look good. You will have to know ahead of time where they will do well or you'll be working on a "do-over" soon. If you're not sure, it is very important that you have advise from an expert....a nursery or garden center professional. It's a big investment of time and money for you, so be sure everthing is planned and correct.

When evaluating your landscape, perhaps you should consider whether some are of your lawn could be replaced with evergreen ground covers or other fillers. Foundation plantings and flower or planting beds can reduce your mowing time. Smooth out your mowing lines and cut out awkward spaces to save time as well. Saving time is great....but so it saving your back and body!

The safest design to ensure maintaining value is a polished, professional quality design that reflects good taste. There should be enough balance and interest among eye catching details-without having too many focals points.

Landscapes that are well-maintained appreciate in value as they grow. Insure that well-tended appearance and install a low maintenance landscape. It will be easier to keep it attractive and more in demand.
