Asphalt Roofing
Asphalt is, by far, the most popular roofing material throughout the United States. For many homeowners, the basic reason for choosing asphalt is that it can be aesthetically pleasing, especially compared to metal. At present, asphalt shingles are available in an array of colors and color blends, which can make for an appealing household exterior. Metal, by comparison, is more limited in the color. From a cost perspective, asphalt roofs are also less expensive than metal ones. Moreover, asphalt roofing can often be installed in a single day, whereas it might take longer to install metal one. And unlike metal, asphalt won’t rust over time, which makes it a more reliable material in the eyes of many roofing contractors.
While plenty of benefits are inherent in asphalt, one disadvantage is that it is not as long-lasting as metal. Additionally, as compared to metal roofing, asphalt has a greater tendency to produce leaks, which will end up costing a homeowner a fair amount of money. Finally, most warranties on asphalt roofs are shorter and far more limited than those on metal ones. So despite the cheaper initial price, asphalt roofing can constitute a significant financial drain in the long run.
Metal Roofing
Though metal is not so popular as asphalt as a roof material, several benefits are inherent in it. Despite its limited colors, more homeowners these days have chosen metal as their roofing material than ever before. More importantly, metal roofs are highly resistant to hail, wind and other inclement weather, which makes them a more solid option as far as leak protection goes. When properly maintained, metal can last a lot longer than asphalt. Additionally, metal roofing is fireproof, which can save homeowners money on insurance while offering an added degree of protection at the same time. Finally, metal roofing is known to be energy efficient. Therefore, despite the higher initial cost of installation, metal roofing can save homeowners a fair amount of money on heating and cooling over time.
While there are plenty of good reasons to have a metal roof installed, the material still has some drawbacks. First, though metal roofs are more expensive than their asphalt counterparts, they are just plain and don’t look good. Though metal can actually increase the value of one’s home, it is still a relatively unconventional roofing material. Metal roofing can also generate an uncomfortable level of noise during inclement weather. Finally, metal roofs require a fair degree of maintenance, as they often need to be coated and repainted in order to prevent rust and decay.
