The most important thing about this precious stone is its color. The name 'ruby' was derived from the Latin word 'rubens', meaning 'red'. The red of the ruby is very significant as on one hand it talks about vigor, willpower, anger, courage and on the other it signifies joy, sexuality, passion and love.

Ruby comes from the mineral corundum, one of the hardest minerals after diamond. In yester years, rulers extensively used rubies in their kingdom making this beautiful gemstone known as the ‘stone of royalty’. Ruby had been an important part of the fortune of the olden emperors and kings. The warriors used rubies to heal their wounds and reduce the pain. It was believed that the healing power of rubies could minimize their suffering.

The color of ruby varies from deep crimson, purple to pale rose. The finest ruby is of medium dark toned red and is very expensive. However, the other colors available also add to the beauty of ruby jewelry expressing the different emotions. Ruby jewelry being rich in color looks miraculous when wore in any form, be it pendants, rings or earrings. It looks good for the day wear as well as evenings.

Ruby is the birthstone for people born in July. It is auspicious for the people wearing it, relieving them from the pains and sufferings, and adding to their wealth. Ruby also happens to be an ideal gift for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversary.

Rubies of finest quality were discovered in North-East of Myanmar. They are mined in Vietnam and Thailand as well, competing to that of the ones produced in Myanmar. Northern Pakistan in the Hunza Valley, Kashmir, Tadzhikistan, Laos, India, Nepal, and Afghanistan are also amongst the places where ruby deposits are found.
