A opinion and observation about how horses react to children and the benefits of horse ownership.

Do you like horses? Are you afraid of horses? Have you thought about owning a horse but worry they’re too big and costly? These are typical questions people ask themselves when it comes to horses.

Here we’re just going to address how horses respond to Children.

Horses are very sensitive animals. Many people think horses are telepathic, and after being around horses for over 16 years nearly on a daily basis (I shoe horses) I am pretty sure they are as well.

Horses are wonderful animals. They are herd animals so a social order is very important to them. The mares “females” that have babies are usually very good mothers of their young. After a babies birth the mother nurses for sometimes over a year. They can also be very protective of their babies.

In most cases horses love children. This will be obvious when you observe how a horse reacts to the presence of a child. The horse will usually bow its head and approach a child very carefully. They act as if they are taking care of and looking after the child.

For this reason horses and children mix together very well from a riding perspective as well. Even with the child up on the horses back the horse will be acting as if the child’s best interest is uppermost in its mind. The horse will be more careful in general.

Whereas children and horses are a great mix it would be wise to always remember horses are big powerful animals that weigh many times over 1000 pounds. Because of this we frail humans are easy for a horse to cause pain to either intentionally or unintentionally. They are just very big – if they accidentally step on our feet it’s very easy to have the delicate bones in our foot broken – especially that of a Childs. Always remember to exercise good common sense and be careful around horses.

When push comes to shove and we compare all the pros and cons of horse ownership horses can on a cost basis provide us with some of the best experiences in life. Being around such large animals is humbling and good for our soul. Horses can be a rich and fulfilling experience indeed.
