Kids and Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a growing concern, especially among children. As computers have become more and more important to everyday life, more and more people have been diagnosed with myopia, or nearsightedness, some far earlier than has been the average in the past.

More children are also experiencing an earlier onset of myopia, largely due to increased computer use.

What Is Computer Vision Syndrome?
Computer use requires extended, intense close-vision focus. This can put a great deal of strain on the eyes as they work to maintain this unusually close focus over long periods of time. Eventually, the eyes can become myopic.

Both children and adults can suffer from CVS. Computer use is more likely to have adverse effects on children, though, largely because their eyes are not mature and so are not as capable of handling the extended short-distance focus required by computer use.

Preventing Computer Vision Syndrome
Several steps can be taken to reduce the effects of computer vision syndrome. You can help protect your child’s vision with these approaches, as well as protecting your own vision by taking similar ergonomic measures for your computer workstations.

• Reduce glare
• Provide sufficient light
• Set the monitor slightly below eye level
• Take frequent breaks
• Limit your child’s computer use

In addition, you can use larger fonts on your computer to reduce eyestrain. For children, be sure their desk, as well as their monitor, is positioned properly to allow them to view the screen at the appropriate angle.

Be sure to take your child to the eye doctor on a regular basis, too. Some children may suffer from eye issues and not even be aware of it since they simply assume what they are experiencing is “normal.”
