Key to a healthy Spine - All you need to know about it

Each of the three germinal sheets carries within themselves the potential to grow into some very highly specialized cells. With this the foundations are laid at the building site of our body’s cathedral.

Now the great variety of materials needed will be delivered. The stones needed to erect the walls, the timber for the construction of the roof, the marble to line the floors, and so on and so forth. Each single material serves a specific function within the entirety of the building. As these specialised cells begin to develop further they become interconnected.

This interconnection literally becomes matter as our spine. The three germinal sheets are arranged in layers. The inner layer is called endoderm, the middle is mesoderm and the oute one is called ectoderm. These words have their origin in ancient Greek and literally mean inner layer, middle layer and outer layer. From the beginning they are connected through the neural tube which is the origin of the spinal cord and the brain.

With further development of the neuronal tube, our embryo grows into the evolutionary stage of an amphibian which makes him look like a tadpole. Through this process we can observe how the embryo first develops a reptilian form, then the form of a fish where it breathes through the gills. Later our embryo will develop lungs and grow into a higher life form.

Most of vertebrate’s ancestors, fish as well as some reptiles, have no extremities so they can only move their bodies by winding. For this reason they have to be able to move in a sinuous curve. If there were only a uniform muscle on the right and the left side of an elastic stick it would be the same as a bow and an impulse for a forward movement could not be given.

The muscle has to be sub-divided so that a graded movement is possible. It is the segmental harmonically coordinated contraction of muscles one behind the other which makes a snake glide. This segmentation along the spine creates areas innervated from one spinal nerve. Each of these spinal nerves consists of three branches, one for each germinal sheet. The role of the spinal nerve as a sensory branch for the ectoderm also to provide nerves for the skin.
