Kerala, no doubt, is a beautiful place situated towards the southern side of India. Being born a Malayali, I love all those traditional home made food. This extraordinary love towards Kerala food can be attributed towards my growing up in North India. The food, culture, and languages of North India are so different from South India. This has often left me craving for my very own traditional dishes, but my Mom being a great cook just make all dishes and I keep on craving for more such delicacies.
My north Indian friends are often surprised to notice my love for south Indian dishes. They just end up saying, “haven’t you had enough? Let’s have it coz we love Kerala food”. Though there are several of my Kerala favs but Sadya is something unavoidably delicious, interesting, and colorful of the many dishes.
Sandya in Malayalam (language of Kerala) means banquet. This big feast is generally organized at big name events like marriages, birthdays, childbirth, or Onam festival. This is purely a vegetarian meal served on a banana leaf. People sit cross-legged on floor to relish the delicacies.
The main dish served is plain boiled rice. After this, you are given several curries, papadum, plain yogurt, and other delicious items. Some of these all time favorite items include Parippu, Sambar, Rasam, Aviyal, Kaalan, Olan, Koottukari, Kichadi, Pachadi, Thoran, Injipuli, and pickles.
