Imagine the unique and delightful concept of sleeping under the stars in total luxury.

The Koija star beds are positioned 15 feet above the Ewaso Nyiro River and can be accessed by a foot bridge from the opposite bank. Neighbouring Loisaba Wilderness, these special star beds sit on a simple wooden deck with palm-thatched roof.

I am sure you’ve heard about the ’mukokoteni’ or market cart on the streets of Nairobi. Take one of these and build a luxurious bed on top-sounds simple and it is. Just imagine being able to pick up your bed, wheel it onto an open deck, lie on it and observe a vast expanse of starlit sky. It’s recommended that you keep a pair of binoculars under your pillow for this very purpose! Do you get punctures? You may ask. So far, so good: no star bed punctures to report.

During your stay you will be well looked after by the Koija community. They will be your hosts. Mukogodo Maasai warriors that have been fully-trained by Loisaba Wilderness will serve you at dinner and pour your drinks around an open fire.

The Koija community receives a percentage of every bed night fee from Loisaba Wilderness who, in turn, manages the facility and is proud to work hand-in-hand with the locals. Using revenue received in 2004 the community managed to set up a bursary fund to enable the education of all 23 school leavers from Ewaso primary school fro four years of secondary schooling. Part of this fund has been dedicated to support technical training for youths who have completed form 4, providing them with an opportunity to find a vocation and learn a trade. The community hopes to sponsor their first graduate student- a Maasai girl- last September.

The Laikipia wildlife forum has engaged in a three –year destination marketing plan for Laikipia and the Ewaso Ecosystems and represents 50 tourist operations within the region. Both Loisaba Wilderness and the Koija star beds are members of the Forum and continue to support its efforts to put Laikipia on the tourist map in such a way that it rivals the Mara in the ayes of the World.
