To start you off is a brief history of this World famous hotel originally builds in 1932 and then burned by the Mau Mau freedom fighters operating in the Aberdare forest in 1954. It was in this hotel that a princess climbed one evening in 1952 and climbed down the following morning as the Queen of the British Empire-Queen Elizabeth. The Queen returned there in 1983 and spent a night in the Queen Elizabeth Suite, One of the two self contained suites facing the waterhole with its private balcony.
Undeterred Sherbrook Walker hotelier build the present house in 1957, when he first entered with his first party “it rained all night long and visibility was poor we didn’t see much”. Another party later on went there and spent 6 nights and wrote” Six days and nights in this tree makes it seem much closer to heaven than Earth. It`s with regret that we have to go below.”
To get to the Treetop we head off to the north from Nairobi to Thika which has the World third largest pineapple plantation then across vast coffee bush to Nyeri the main administrative town of Central Kenya and the burial place of Collin Bowden Powell the founder of the world scout movement. We proceed for Lunch to the Outspan Hotel which is the base hotel for the Treetop. This Hotel was build by Sherbrooke Walker and his wife Lady Bettie in 1928.
After lunch as we await transport to the Treetops lets stroll to the nearby Agikuyu Peace museum which from the outside is very nondescript but inside there are relic of the past. The Agikuyu are the natives of this land who between 1952 and 1959 during the state of emergency many of their men were was to move to urban areas in search of jobs as all their land were taken up by the colonial settle. All this is recorded in this tiny museum.
Around 3 pm we head to the treetop which is a stone through from the base hotels and do a game drive enroute. From the Treetops on a clear afternoon God’s Mountain (Mt.Kenya) is clearly visible. From the safety of our balcony its time to watch the animals coming to the waterhole and elephants keeping us company over dinner. The hyenas take their take in the waterhole with their well known antics of ripping buffaloes their tail as they come to water.
The Abardare is a rhino sanctuary and be sure to see quite a number of them as the come to the water. After a night in Tree think of proceeding further north to the Samburu Country or the various Ranches in Laikipia Specializing in Eco Tourism
