But regardless of whether you have sinusitis or not, it is always helpful to be informed on how the sinuses work and how to take proper care for them to avoid infection.

What are Sinuses?
Sinuses are air-filled cavities which are located in the face and skull. There are four pairs of sinuses. The right and left frontal sinuses are located in the forehead region. The maxilliary sinuses are found in the cheek area. The ethmoid sinuses are located between the eyes while the sphenoid sinuses lie deep in the skull. Some experts say they lighten the skull while some say they serve as voice resonators. Though the function of the sinuses is not clearly understood, they play a huge part in medical aspect. When infected, these sinuses can cause symptoms that bring pain and discomfort for a person.

Sinusitis develops when the sinuses get inflamed. The normal drainage is impaired as the mucus gets so thick and sticky and trapped inside the nasal passages. This normally happens when you get a cold. But having common colds is not the same as having sinusitis. The symptoms are worse and felt for longer periods of time. To give you an idea, symptoms include frequent headaches, clogged and runny nose, post-nasal drip, sore throat, bad breath, fever and fatigue. Aside from colds gone bad, other causes of sinusitis are bacterial infection, bad allergies, fungal infection and abnormal growths in the sinuses causing blockage.

How to Keep Your Sinuses Healthy and Prevent Sinusitis
Fortunately, there is something you can do to prevent sinusitis. When prone to allergies, it is best to stay away from things which can trigger allergic reactions. Keep your surroundings clean at all times as strong fumes and contaminated air can cause irritation in the nasal passages. Stay away from polluted areas. Avoid cigarette smoking as it causes your sinuses to get congested.

Hydration is a way to keep your sinuses healthy. Drinking lots of fluid makes the mucus thin, helping to reduce the blockage from your nasal passages. Make a habit to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water each day. Water increases the moisture in your body and helps prevent congestion. Another thing that helps promote moisture is by using humidifiers. It helps to moisten the air in your home. Your sinuses can drain easier if the air is moist. Air conditioners also help in keeping the temperature stable at home. Home remedies such as nasal washing and steam treatments, are also highly advised to keep the sinuses clean and healthy.
