With one damaged tyre, whilst driving around it might not be clear that there is a problem and so a driver may continue completely oblivious to the issue that needs addressing immediately.

In addition it is important to look out for natural wear and tear. Over time it is natural for tyres to become worn after extensive use with grip severely diminished. To meet legal standards, they should have 1.6mm of tread depth across at least 75 per cent of the tread pattern. This is to ensure that the tyres are of a safe condition for car owners to drive. Obviously these wear and tear checks are not as important for brand new or relatively new tyres but as mentioned before regular checks should still be undertaken, given the uncertainty regarding the quality of roads.

Damaged or worn tyres create a severe risk for car owners as they can affect important aspects of driving such as braking distance. With less grip, braking distances are increased and can be particularly dangerous in situations such as emergency stops or approaching busy junctions. Additionally, the car’s handling can be affected by a lack of grip, which can become a serious issue that needs addressing immediately. Also, fuel consumption can be affected as the tyre performance decreases, making it more costly to drive.

With all of these issues that can arise from poor condition tyres and the current state of the roads, it is of vital importance that car owners regularly inspect their tyres to ensure that they are safe whilst driving.
