The term 'Chauth' means 'fourth day' and 'Karwa' refers to an earthen pot with a spout that symbolizes peace & prosperity necessary for the rituals. This way it got its name as 'Karwa Chauth'. It occurs just 9 days before Diwali and soon after Dusshera in the 'Karthik' month, occurring from October to November as per Hindu Calender. Thus Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the 4th day of the new moon ('kartik ki chauth').
Women get traditionally dressed in the evening. They usually wear a pink or red sari or gold woven 'zari' pattern 'lehenga-choli'. Newlywed brides put on their bridal costume. All beautify themselves with wearing jewelry and 'mehendi' or henna, particularly on the hands. Decorative 'bindis' are applied on the forehead who take part in the celebration.
Since early morning married women keep a strict fast without taking even a drop of water on the day. They wear new, festive clothes and worship Shiva, Parvati and their son Kartikeya along with 10 earthen pot 'karwas' that are filled with sweets. These Karwas are believed to be given to daughters & sisters with gifts. And, of course, all wives wish lavish gifts from their husbands!
The celebration observing fast begins before sunrise and ends offering prayers & worshiping the moon at night. In other words, the fast is broken once the moon is viewed and offering water to it. All rituals of the day gets completed with it. In many places, women keeping fast gather in a group from all over the neighborhood and narrate mythological stories, which underscore the importance of Karwa Chauth.
The fast observed in 'Karwa Chauth' precedes the festival of Diwali, the biggest festival of the Hindus with the merry tone of the festivity & feasting, fun & frolic in good measure.
