When you start learning Japanese, vocabulary is one of the very interesting parts of this language. The more you learn new words the more interest you gain in learning Japanese. At the primary level when you have just begun to start learning Japanese, more emphasis is given on learning vocabulary than any other thing. One of the main causes behind this is because once you are aware and familiar with few basic words you will find it easier to understand the grammar. In addition you will also be able to speak the basic sentences in Japanese by using this vocabulary.
In Japanese language at the initial stages words are taught by using only the hiragana script. Once you are comfortable with the katakana script you are then introduced to the katakana vocabulary which is totally different from the words which we write in either hiragana or kanji. Till the time you are not taught kanjis, the words which can be written in kanji are still taught by using hiragana. However once you know the respective kanjis then it is always better that you make use of kanji and then write the vocabulary.
When you have just started learning Japanese the vocabulary is provided to you by your teachers in the class. But as the level increases there are various sources through which you are introduced to various new words. The very common sources are the kanji and its jyukugo, your text books and the sentence patterns which you are taught in Japanese grammar. It is always a very good habit to note down all the new words which you come through in a separate book which makes it easier for you to lean them whenever you want to. In other words you will not have to go around and search in different books for learning Japanese vocabulary if you have maintained only one book. You later on will realize that this book is like a handy dictionary for you which is very useful.
As far as the JLPT exams are concerned Japanese vocabulary plays a very essential role when you appear for these exams. In all the sections of the JLPT exam which are the mojigoi, chyoukai and dokkai, it is a must that you are thorough with the Japanese vocabulary. You must be aware that mojigoi is a section which is dedicated only to check you proficiency level in Japanese vocabulary. However this does not mean that in the other sections you will not require the knowledge of vocabulary. In chyoukai if you do not know the vocabulary it may happen that you may not understand the conversation which in return will result in you giving the wrong answer. In the same way in the dokkai section which consists of comprehensions as well as grammar if you don’t know the meaning of a particular word which is an important hint in answering the question you might end up answering something wrong.
Therefore to prove your proficiency it is very important that you learn the Japanese vocabulary thoroughly. A good practice would be to read the vocabulary for only 15 minutes every day. This would reduce your burden of learning vocabulary at the last minute of the exams. In addition you will not lose your interest. Also try and use as much vocabulary as possible while speaking and writing Japanese. Play games and puzzles to make learning Japanese vocabulary interesting and fun.
