The Legacy
Rajasthan, the largest state in India, has been a centre of art and culture. Civilization was there in the state for 6000-8000 years. The Aryans (2000 B.C.), the Mauryans (400 A.D.) and the Scythians (the Rajputs), had settled in this region for some times. The Rajputs ruled the land for the longest period, and gave the region the cultural heritage. So it is called the "Land of the Rajputs". They have built those awe-inspiring forts and palaces - the major attractions for an avid tourist.
The Geography
The Aravali Range runs across Rajasthan from Mount Abu (1,722 m) to Khetri in the northeast dividing the state into 60% in the northwest and 40% in the southeast. The northwest tract includes the Thar Desert. The southeast is higher in elevation and plain grassland, it has sheltered the beautiful Chambal River. Farther north there is Bharatpur district in the basin of the river Yamuna.
