1. Make sure your software is quick enough. If not, your patients are going to get irritated while they wait for information to be retrieved. This might simply cause them further distress.
2. If the system is difficult to use, then your staff are going to be fed up with it and won't use it properly.
3. The key to providing effective patient care is reliability. Sensitive information is contained in the system and retrieving this as and when necessary can be crucial to a patient's well-being. If your system crashes, or is unpredictable then it can be a nuisance.
4. Does your staff spend a lot of time trying to resolve issues and fix problems with your system? Are they constantly calling the help-desk for fixes and updates? It's high time you change your system.
5. If your current needs are not met, then chances are that your future need will not be met as well. You should be able to figure out what your requirements are likely to be, so that you can implement systems that are practical and facilitate your patients' needs.
6. If the learning curve when you introduced the system was steep, then chances are that your team will require constant trainings. This can to a great extent impact the availability of staff and the quality of care that is provided to patients.
7. Your electronic patient records system must be compatible with other software. If this doesn't happen then it might cause a problem. Exporting or importing data may become a problem. The system must be flexible and easy to use.
8. If your staff is happy with the system as it meets all their needs while at the same time the patients are not happy then there is a problem somewhere. Your priority is your patients.
9. Guarding the privacy of your patients should be your main concern and care should be taken to ensure that the system is secure enough. Different levels of access should be present in your software so that only select people who need to are able to access it.
10. Well your system works great, but the costs involved are huge and keep spiraling. If you feel that your system is working out too expensive, then why not look out for another option?
Now that you are more aware of all these things, do you think that your patient record software could do with replacing?
