The feeling of anxiety and uncertainty are main ingredients of suspense. Romantic suspense is about a mystery or an intrigue, waiting in the doorway to be attended by the protagonist.

Suspense is when the protagonist finds out or knows the culprit early in the story and the fact now left to be found out is how much loss and damage will this culprit cause. At this very moment comes the role of romance, there should b distinctive and one of its kind chemistry going on between the protagonists. In romantic suspense, everything happens instantly as there is dearth of time. There are no weeks or months here, but days! This does not mean there should essentially be love at first sight, but they must notice each other and give their reactions in the very early meets.

An artistic blend of romance into a suspenseful tale, a romantic suspense author combines passion and peril while weaving a tantalizing tale with the help of captivating characters. The romantic suspense author knows how to thrillingly entertain the readers and keep them turning the pages, deep into the dark night.

In a typical contemporary romantic suspense novel, there is a heroine who is apparently victimized by the villain in either an attempted or actual crime. She then works with the hero, the protagonist, who is coincidently in such a field where he gives his best to the girl and helps him dutifully. By the time the mystery is resolved and the novel reaches the verge of ending, the bond between the hero and the heroine, the victim-savior relationship transforms into a romantic one. Eventually, this genre has now broadened its dimensions, all credits to authors like Amanda Quick.

Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that the development of a romantic relationship always lies at the very core of the novel. Mary Stewart perfected the ultimate blend of mystery and romance in romantic suspense novel by writing 10 novels in the period 1955-1967. She seamlessly illuminated the personality of the hero while solving the case, so as to enable his female counterpart, the heroine to fall in love with him.

Romantic suspense books are widely enjoyed round the globe. Eminent writers like Linda Howard, Cindy Gerard, Nora Roberts, Elizabeth Lowell, Amanda Quick and the likes are world renowned and their books are largely celebrated. A mystery or suspense subplot mixed with any romance does not give a romantic suspense book. It takes much more than that. Both the genres are to be mixed fairly equally. Unlike other genres where a dynamic opening works as icing on the cake, here there is a dire for follow-through. There is intense tension pouring in along with the romance between the protagonists that is going on constantly.

Modern womanhood is an issue that is nowadays addressed lightheartedly and humorously. It is the genre of fiction called Chick lit that takes care of this. Although it includes some elements of romance, generally it is not considered a sub category of the romantic novel genre. This is aptly so because the romantic relationship of the heroine is equally or less important than her relationship with her friends and family. Initially, they featured career driven, hip, stylish, female protagonists of around 20-30 years worried solely about boys, sex and shopping. With passage of time, the genre of Chick lit earned an image of featuring a female protagonist with her womanhood taking full circles in a heavily thematised plot. Some of the very well known novels of this genre are Sex and the City, Everyone worth Knowing, Passion’s Promise, Unforgettable, Read between the Lies, summer and the City and Lipstick Jungle.
