One of the Microsoft’s most profitable products is the Windows operating system, but the last operating system, Microsoft Vista, which was released worldwide in 2007, failed to fulfill the consumer’s expectations. Now, the software giant bets high with its upcoming operating system, Windows 7.

The company has already created much fuss about the new product and it seems that Windows 7 would replace the successful XP operating system.

Now the big question is, "Could Windows 7 accomplish everything that is expected from it?" Probably not, but it certainly makes a good attempt. The software giant has introduced the first public Windows 7 (ready-to-manufacture) RTM to TechNet and Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers as the operating system was finished last month.

Reasons to upgrade or stay away

Available versions: At the time of Windows Vista release, users complained about its number of available versions, while Windows XP did not initially ship with quite as many versions, but later the count grew. However, Windows 7 is also shipped in many versions starting from a Starter Edition for netbooks, two Home versions (Home Basic and Home Premium), plus a Professional, an Enterprise and an Ultimate edition. The Enterprise edition is available only to large corporations; Home Basic will be sold only in "emerging markets," and the Starter edition will be sold only with netbooks.

Now, the SMBs can purchase the family pack available from the company, or use the starter edition for their low cost netbooks. The family pack version for Windows 7 primarily allows users to upgrade up to three PCs to the Home Premium edition of the operating system.

In fact, the prices could be anothr big hit for SMBs. The pricing for the various versions of Windows 7 have been revised shortly and have been raised but still they are lower than the initial pricing of Windows Vista.

New features to check

Redmond giant has introduced some new features, which makes the Windows 7 even better. From switching between programs to recording TV, the operating system simplifies the way you use your PC and the way your PC connects with the world.

It has new improved taskbar for full-screen previews and jump lists, a zippier way of previewing your open applications and folders, which mean a faster access to your data.

The company has done a good redecorating job with its new themes, which make your workplace fresh again. It has been reported that Windows 7 is faster than ever, because of its ability to take advantage of multi-core and multithreaded chips and GPUs. Also, Windows 7 boots up much faster than XP, but it is not speedier than XP in daily use.

Hence, the new operating system is better than the XP and will rejuvenate your working atmosphere.

Windows XP: Dying horse?

Even though Microsoft officially dropped XP more than a year ago and is not sold preinstalled on new computers, the company has issued a series of reprieves for sales of the aging operating system like downgradation to XP Professional. It also provides XP Mode, which is a full updated version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 that runs in a virtual machine in Windows 7.
