Ipod or Mobile Phone?

The Ipod has certainly been the success story for Apple but are they facing some stiff competion from the mobile phone manufacturers for entertainment device sales?

The Ipod was first released in 2001 and proceeded to take the multimedia player market by storm, now in it's 5th generation, having achieved over 60 million in sales to 2006. Now that's enough sales volume to get any electrical manufacturer interested particulary ones that already make portable devices capable of accoustic reproduction such as the mobile phone.

In 2001 Nokia was looking in the same direction with the release of the 5510 which included a mp3 player. Unfortunately it lacked many of the abilities of an audio player like the Ipod due to having only 64mb of memory compared to 1GB of the first release Ipod and with it's cost couldn't be considered a competitor.

That began to change in 2004 with Sony having joined Ericsson and subsequently releasing the 'Walkman' series of mobile and Nokia realising 'Music Edition' models that are specifically directed at the audio player market. Now the Ipod has serious contenders with phone handsets featuring external headphone options, dedicated music player software in the handset and increasing storage capacity.

Now the consumer has a decision to make in that do they buy an Ipod and a mobile phone or get it all in one? The mobile phone in todays' culture is the nessecity device and the Ipod is the luxury item. Combine the features of a dedicated music player and a mobile phone and you have an obvious choice and at the same time eliminating the need to carry two devices.

Todays' music player mobiles have enough features, audio quality and storage capacity to compete head to head with audio products such as the Ipod and offer even more through camera, video capabilities, internet connectivity and mobile all in one.

These crossover of features starts to make the Ipod on a technical perspective look dull and it won't be too long before Apple need to take up the challenge of producing an all in one multimedia mobile device.
