The iPhone is a groundbreaking gaming platform. From casual time-killers to in-depth strategy-action-RPGs, the phone has it all. Thousands of offerings await, courtesy of everyone from industry giants Konami and Capcom, to never-before-seen independent developers.

For those who know where to look, the iPhone (and iPod touch) offer gamers an astounding array of choices. However, due to the sheer volume of games, and limited browsing capabilities on the iTunes store, finding the right game can be tougher than the last level of Contra.

Fortunately, for the intrepid gamer, a number of options exist. This article presents five ways to find the iPhone game of your dreams.

Top Free & Paid Games
The iTunes store maintains a constantly-updated list of top iPhone games, both free and paid. This is by no means a comprehensive list, however, as it limits games to the top 100 best-sellers, and obscures hidden gems lying lower down in the list.

Browse by Genre
While not as prominent as the Top 100 lists, iTunes categorizes games into 14 genres, each of which contains its own top lists and recent arrivals. For those, like me, who gravitate toward particular genres (I'm a big strategy/RPG fan myself), genres are a great way to narrow down selections.

Find a Publisher You Like
iTunes lets you browse not only by game, but also by publisher. When you find a game you like, locate its entry on the iTunes store, and click on the publisher. You'll see a list of every game the publisher has produced. Often, publishers focus on a particular niche; if they've produced one gem you like, chances are they'll have more.

Ask the Community
While iTunes is a great way to find games, it limits you to a small range of games organized largely at Apple's discretion. To get a wider range of perspectives, seek out game communities on the web. TouchArcade has a thriving forum with thousands of members eager to share their thoughts and opinions. A search for "iphone game forums" will turn up other communities, too.

Find independent review sites
I'm the founder of Brickroll, a leading iPhone game review site. We're big fans of iPhone games, and publish 10-20 reviews each week. Other prominent sites include TouchArcade, SlideToPlay, and NoDPad. Review sites provide independent, unfiltered perspectives on iPhone games, and often go into greater depth than the reviews on iTunes.
