Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

If you are considering straightening your teeth, you may be wondering which is the better treatment option for you: Invisalign or traditional braces. Invisalign has become much more popular recently, and here's why.

Increased Comfort

Many people find the hard plastic aligners of Invisalign to be more comfortable than the wires of traditional braces that can irritate your cheeks, lips and gums. And the traditional braces solution that puts the wires behind the teeth ("lingual braces") can irritate your tongue as well.

Some dentists will argue that Invisalign is also more comfortable because it does not have the painful tightening that traditional braces have, but in truth the two treatments are about equal in this way. Most Invisalign users report that moving to a new aligner can cause a significant amount of discomfort.

Increased Freedom

Traditional braces come with a long line of restrictions about what foods you can't eat. One braces website says you should not eat foods that are:

• Chewy
• Crunchy
• Sticky
• Hard
• Foods you have to bite into

So, basically, you're telling me I can drink soup while I have braces?

Invisalign allows people to eat and drink all their regular foods, making it a much more popular option.

Invisalign also requires fewer follow-up visits to get the results you desire, making it easier to fit into your busy schedule.

Cleaning

Cleaning is a wash between Invisalign and traditional braces. Although braces can be a pain to clean, when you have Invisalign, you have to clean your teeth every time you remove the aligners to eat or drink anything. This means that you spend about as much time cleaning your teeth with Invisalign as with traditional braces.

Aesthetics

The main thing people like about Invisalign is that the aligners are transparent and very hard to see when they're in place. Compared to the metal mouth that people remember from high school, Invisalign is a much better option, especially for adults.
