This article will help you understand Invisalign so you can make a decision about whether it is the right treatment for you.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a different approach to tooth-straightening. In the past, metal brackets and wires were used to straighten your teeth. Although this approach is still used in many cases today, many other people are getting their teeth straightened through another method. Invisalign uses a computer-designed series of clear plastic aligner trays to move your teeth into position.

When you start Invisalign treatment, you will be given an aligner tray that fits over your teeth. It will likely feel a little snug because it is subtly moving your teeth. For the first couple days after you put in this new aligner tray, you will likely experience some soreness in your teeth and gums. After about two weeks, you will be given a second tray, which you will wear for another two weeks. After about a year or so, your teeth will reach their desired straightness.

What Are the Advantages of Invisalign?

Invisalign has grown rapidly in popularity because it offers many advantages for patients. The main advantage is that it is nearly invisible. The clear plastic aligners fit over the teeth and are very subtle. Most people will not notice them. For very special occasions like weddings or important pictures, you can even remove them.

You will also remove your aligners for eating, which means that you will have no dietary restrictions during your Invisalign treatment. And you will not have any additional difficulty in caring for your teeth--just brush and floss normally, unlike braces which can be very difficult to clean.

Finally, although Invisalign aligners feel about the same to the teeth that are being moved, they are much more comfortable to the rest of your mouth. There are no wires and brackets that can irritate your tongue and cheeks.

Are There Any Disadvantages of Invisalign?

Although Invisalign is a highly desired dental treatment, it is not for everyone, and it does have a few significant disadvantages. The most important limitation of Invisalign is that it is not capable of treating major orthodontic problems. You will likely not know whether you are a candidate for Invisalign until you have had a detailed examination by a dentist.

Another problem with Invisalign is that, although it does not impose any dietary restrictions, it does require that you clean your teeth every time you eat something. For some people, this is a minor restriction, but if you have a tendency to be an all-day grazer it can become a major obstacle.

Despite these two disadvantages, most people who attempt it are very happy with Invisalign.
