Interlacing Technique: A Thing of the Past

Interlacing is a technique of loading image files in a website in a non-contiguous method. Interlaced images (whether GIFs or bitmaps) are images where the rows of pixels, also called as “scanlines” are stored out of any proper sequence.

In case of GIF files, interlacing displays GIF files by painting every 8th row of the image on the screen first. After loading the first set of rows, every fourth row is added and then the image appears to come in focus gradually. Finally, after displaying every row, the whole image gets visible at full resolution. On a fast internet connection, interlaced images will be displayed quickly. The users won’t notice whether the image is interlaced or not. But, interlacing can be a problem on modems with slower connections and also if a website has larger files.

The interlacing technique was used in website images in the past. It was used for low resolution monitors. The interlaced images were made to appear quickly. It also gave an Illusion of higher bandwidth. Still, the users had to wait for the image to appear. This was quite frustrating and made the readers feel as if they are waiting for a longer time to view the image details, especially if it was a large image map.

Professional graphic design companies do not employ interlaced images in background graphics as it slows the page dramatically. Even for images used in the foreground, the experts first save an image in interlaced form and load it on a test page to judge whether it works or not in web pages.

In the corporate graphic design field, interlaced images are rarely used nowadays. This is because of high resolution monitors that support progressive images. Progressive images are downloaded quickly. Moreover, corporate graphic design companies do not use interlacing technique for large banners or images as it creates a blurry effect.
Interlacing increases the file size and does not appeal to most of the users because of the initial blurry effect.

Interlacing was a thing of the past. Nowadays, professional graphic design companies use non interlacing techniques for GIF and bitmap files that get downloaded quickly than image with interlaced technique.
