Instruction of turning off the OBD Check Engine Light

There is a computer in the car which used for recognizing any abnormal signal showing a malfunction of one of the components it operates. In response to this signal, the computer will assign a trouble code to the malfunction and turn on the check engine light.

The light just shows that a code is present. The only method to access this code and decipher it is to have a code scanner. Scanners have become quite cheap and can be bought at any car parts shop. They are designed to interface with the computer by the on board diagnostic, which short for OBD. The code can then be displayed and deciphered. To clear a code the problem must be repaired first.

Insert the code scanner cable into the OBD connector; it is usually located to the left of the steering column under the dash on most cars. Some foreign cars have the port located on the right side of the column or behind the ashtray. It will always be near to the steering column. If you can't find it, consult the user manual.

Turn the ignition key to the "On" position without launching the engine. Press the "Read" key on the code scanner. It will take several seconds to diagnose the computer. It will display a letter followed by four numbers. Write down this code on paper. Any extra codes will be displayed after a short pause.

Look up these codes with the accompanying code sheet. The code and its meaning will be given. It will also give a description of the probable cause by what kind of failure the part is experiencing.

Fix the error before attempting to reset the computer. If the error is still present the light will come back on at once. Turn the ignition key on and press the "Erase" key. The code will be cleared from memory and the check engine light will shut off. There are a lot of online stores over the internet; you can find that what you need online.
