Beneath the surface, the earth’s temperature is moderate, so a ground source heat pump can be used throughout the year to provide heating, cooling and hot water for homes and other buildings. Ground source heat pumps use the earth as a heat sink during summer and as a heat reservoir during winter. The heat actually comes from the Sun.

Ground source heat pumps can have open or closed loops which can be installed horizontally, vertically in the ground or even in water bodies like pond or lake. The installation of the ground loop depends on the available land areas and also the soil type at the site. The length of the ground loop depends on the size of the building and the amount of heat you need.

Ground source heat pumps use pipes kept under the ground to draw out the heat.

In case of closed loop systems, water or antifreeze solution is spread through plastic pipes buried under the ground. During winters, the fluid collects heat from the ground and carries it through the system into the building.

During the summer, the system gets reversed and it cools the building by pulling heat from the building, carrying it through the system into the ground. Open loop systems operate on the same principle as closed loop systems and can be installed where sufficient supply of suitable water is available and open emission is available.

There are several advantages of using Air source heat pump. It reduces carbon emissions of your home depending on the fuel replacement. It requires no fuel deliveries. It takes help of the moderate temperatures in the ground to bump up efficiency and reduce the costs of heating and cooling systems. It can provide space heating and hot water and requires little maintenance.
