SAP Enterprise portal can host applications created in various technologies. Various applications like .Net, java, BI web applications, web dynpro etc can be hosted on the enterprise portal. Transports are done using the transport packages.

Generally, SAP has 3 systems in the landscape viz development, quality and production. The enterprise portal objects called the PCD objects can be transported to quality and production using the transport packages. It is like a website but has various features which a normal website can not have. It is mainly used to display business information. Managers and users can take decision on the move using enterprise portal. Enterprise portal also can be displayed on a mobile or a hand handled device so business users can make decisions on the move and achieve necessary business advantages.

SAP's UI technology called SAp Web Dynpro Java or SAP Web Dynpro ABAP are mostly used to develop custom applications for SAP Enterprise portal. SAP EP comes with various in built applications also. Those are called business packages. So at the time of installation os SAP EP, business packages can be chosen based on the requirements. Again, if new requirements come up after intallation, new Business packages can be installed. The best feature of a SAP Enterprise portal is that applications from heterogenous systems can be installed and run on it. So the existing IT investment of an organization is not waste.

For the development of custom applications for SAP EP, SAP Web Dynpro java/ABAP is used which is a plug-in in the Eclipse platform of Java. Eclipse platform together with Java Web Dynpro is called Netweaver developer Studio. SAP Web Dynpro ABAP is integrated in the ABAP workbench. This can be accessed using the SE80 transaction in the SAP R/3 system.
