Let’s say, for example, that the holiday season rolls around and the only promotional and gift items you have on hand are some company branded printed mugs. Often it’s considered inappropriate to use these types of items as seasonal gifts. Mugs and other promotional items are not very personal, and it’s much more appropriate to give personalized gifts—and more valuable gifts—at the holidays. Mugs are ideal for casual gift-giving at any time of the year, but if you want to give these types of promotional items as holiday gifts or for similar types of occasions, you’ll need to do a bit of improvising to make them more appropriate.
With a little bit of creativity, items such as printed mugs can be personalized to make them more appropriate for the holiday season. For example, you can fill each mug with candies or luscious chocolate fudge; and then add a selection of gourmet coffee or tea and perhaps a small wrapped Christmas pudding to each to make a small gift hamper.
For an extra touch, present the gifts in a small basket, a gift bag made from stiff paper, or wrapped in clear cellophane. Use seasonal wrapping, if possible—choose fudge or candy wrapped in red and green, choose gift bags with seasonal images or printed message (you could even have your own gift bags custom designed with Season’s Greetings from your company), or tie your clear cellophane with a red or green ribbon.
Add a personal hand-written note for each recipient, and you’ve just turned your every-day promotional mug into a gift that you can customize for each person you give the gifts to. The note is an important touch—you can include the recipient’s family in your holiday greetings, and if you’re able to include the names of each family member in the note, you can create a personal touch that will make the gift of a promotional mug much more appropriate.
The two important parts of turning promotional items such as mugs into appropriate gifts for the holidays are presentation and personalization. A mug on its own is by no means an appropriate gift, but by presenting it in an attractive way, and adding a few small extra items in the package, the value of the mug is suddenly increased. Similarly, adding a hand-written note (definitely don’t type it up on a computer!) increases the value of the gift, because your recipients will see that you’ve taken the time to make the gift more personal.
